Review of Bohemian Rhapsody (2018) by Frank M — 17 Nov 2018
I have seen Bohemian Rhapsody twice and both times the audience was full of young people....If you go to YouTube there are literally hundreds if not thousands of comments under the Queen videos from young people. They even state how old they are. Teenagers and young adults who were not even born when Queen was popular... They say things like "they wish they had a time machine so they could go back and experience a concert like Live Aid" or that "they like Queen and other artists from that era better than their own generation's music".
What they are seeing when they watch this movie is world that doesn't really exist anymore. No computers, no Internet and no cell phones... A time when musicians played their own instruments and wrote and arranged their own songs. A time when talented musicians could become hugely successful and popular. A time when the general public valued real musicianship and expected it in their musicians. A time when teen aged girls would argue over who their favorite guitar player was. David Gilmour? Jimmy Page? or Peter Frampton?... A time when kids had posters of guitar players and drummers on their walls... The movie Almost Famous which came out in 2000 gives a little peak into that world.
In today's world we literally have celebrities who are famous for being famous. We have manufactured teen pop stars in their thirties still making disposable computerized teen pop for their fans who are also in their thirties and rappers who shout in a monotone over prerecorded computerized beats. Could it be that the young people who like this movie and the YouTube videos are responding to the authenticity of that era?
The movie was not perfect. Some things were out of order. And some things might have been under or over emphasized but the story was told well and with humanity. And it reminds those of us old enough to have experienced it what a glorious time it was musically.
And it shows young people what it was like when Rock Stars ruled the earth.
