Review of Bohemian Rhapsody (2018) by George E — 24 Nov 2018
You can't tell a story like this in two hours, and for that reason, the criticism of the episodic nature of this and its manipulativeness is justified. But so what. It's one of the best films I've seen in years.
A work of art? No. But it is a movie...and escape...an homage to a time and place and a band and it's members and Freddie Mercury that is worthy and joyous and heartfelt and painful and, in the end, triumphant.
If you don't leave this film floating, if there aren't places in this movie that leave your heart in your throat and a tear in your eye, then you must have voted for the imbecile Trump and are intimidated by the subject matter and the fact that it takes a brain to follow it.
This film is a triumph and, if the Oscars weren't so political, I'd say that no one but Remi Malek need apply. He IS Freddie Mercury and this is the best movie in maybe a decade because of it.
