Review of Bohemian Rhapsody (2018) by Angelijo1 — 16 Nov 2018
This movie is the definition of all surface no substance. It is a by the books biopic that offers nothing new to the genre, and skips over a lot of dark and gritty aspects of the life of Freddie Mercury.
It is also paced like a snail which is something I was not expecting going into it. From time to time I caught myself nodding off and damn near fell asleep anytime there was a scene between Freddie and Mary.
The performance by Rami Malek was fine, but felt more like a caricature than anything else. A lot of that has to do with those awful teeth he wears in the film. Watch footage of the real Freddie Mercury and you will see he has an overbite, but this movie went overboard with it.
The concert scenes are very entertaining, but most of that credit goes to the wonderful songs composed by Queen, and not to the filmmakers. I wish the studio would have gone with the Sasha Baron Cohen Freddie Mercury biopic, because I feel he would have done a much more honest portrayal.
It's a shame such an interesting person and groundbreaking band got such a lame by the books movie made about them.
