Review of Bohemian Rhapsody (2018) by Christopher E — 14 Nov 2018
It is quite right that this Queen movie is about the music and the journey of the band including elements of Freddie's private battles but not focusing on them. Why should one band member's lovelife dominate the film? His sex life did not define Freddie or his music and this film has enough about Freddie's loneliness and inner struggle to tell us far more about him that matters than bedroom scenes, repetitive parties etc ever could.
This is not about Freddie's illness, perhaps a sequel could cover that, this is an engrossing, moving and celebratory story of the band's journey. Expertly put together with the music of Queen rightly taking centre stage, this also has incredible performances from the cast.
Rami Malek is mesmerisingly brlliant as Freddie, capturing him perfectly. Gwilym Lee could pass for the real Brian May and the whole cast does a superb job. The events are shown in a different order to reality in order to suit the flow and construction of an effective movie but it is still representing events which happened truthfully, just in a different sequence so it does not matter.
This film satisfied me, enthralled me and entertained me. It showcases the brilliance of Freddie, exactly as it should.
