Review of Bohemian Rhapsody (2018) by Lisa J — 09 Nov 2018
It's a joy to watch Rami Malek portray the icon that is Freddie Mercury. The movie gives insight into the dynamic of the band Queen with its competitive camaraderie and banter. The musical performances are a delight to watch and Malek finds his own way to depict the magnetism and eccentricity of Mercury, all likeable and passionate.
I was worried before going to see this movie due to the critical debates proceeding its release, but this was mostly unfounded. Does the movie stay true to the facts all the way? No, certainly not. Will it please everyone with strong opinions about Mercury? You bet it won't.
But does this film hit the essence of Queen and tell a story worthy of its origin? Definitely. I'd say it's a job well done. Not perfect under severe scrutiny, but it's an uplifting cinematic experience that honors the band's integrity and highlights their outstanding position in a timeless musical landscape.
