Review of Bohemian Rhapsody (2018) by Carole S — 05 Nov 2018
Wonderful film! Heard some criticism that it wasn't authentic (one person nit-picking because the first time on TOTP they didn't perform Killer Queen!) but this was such a good and heartwarming film. It didn;t skate over Freddie's sexuality or his origins. It showed a beautiful relationship between him and Mary (for whom he wrote Love of My Life) and the interaction between all the band members was hilarious at times. It had such a good feel to it, and some incredibly touching moments, especially performing at Live Aid (which I remember). I didn't mind that the timeline was a bit off, and that it was a fairly sanitised view of the band, because I was awash with nostalgia and awe for this man and the band.
Incredibly strong performances, particularly from Rami Malek but also Gwilliam Lee as May, Ben Hardy as Roger (a revelation!) and Joe Mazello as Deakin (Deaky!) ensured the central core of the film stayed in place and was strong. Particularly liked Tom Hollander as 'Miami' too. Honestly, go along, sit back and revel in the wonderful music.
