Review of Bohemian Rhapsody (2018) by Steven V — 02 Nov 2018
(8.5/10).
Bohemian Rhapsody is entertaining, emotional, heartbreaking and sensational. The film does have CGI issues, and even further pacing issues that are more evident on 2nd viewing, with a rushed first half-hour and dragging at some other points. And yet I'd love to see a 3-hour version of the movie to be honest. It is a celebration of Freddie Mercury and Queen, even with all the imperfections and problems that they faced in their lives. It'll be an injustice if Rami Malek is not nominated for the Best Actor Oscar. The rest of the cast is also very impressive in their roles. I've never smiled harder during a film than during Freddie's crowd-singing moment in the film's climactic Live Aid sequence.
People seem to be judging it for what the film "should" be, rather than what it is. The film itself may not be the complete true story biopic that many people want, but it is the epic crowd-pleasing spectacle that we need (and deserve?) right now. There is no such thing as a "complete" true story, especially when it comes to film adaptations. However, I do understand that many will find the film problematic.
Go see Bohemian Rhapsody now! Judge it for yourself. See it in honor of Freddie. The icon. The legend. The human god.
