Review of Bohemian Rhapsody (2018) by Jonathan G — 02 Nov 2018
Bohemian Rhapsody isn't exactly what I was hoping for but it gave me just enough that I left the theatre satisfied with what I saw. Rami Malek is fantastic as Freddie Mercury, not only does he look eerily similar to Mercury, he also captures his flamboyant lifestyle and astonishing on stage presence.
The film itself had a lot of unique camera work, montages, and some very clever segues (one of which involves a rooster). Where the film falls flat for me is when it glances over certain aspects of the film that I thought should have been given more screen time, such as Mercury's struggle with his sexuality, his relationships with his friends and family, and the discovery of him finding out he has aids.
Another issue was the ending, the film sort of ends abruptly without much follow up to the last days of Freddie's life which I felt was very needed in the film, it's very easy to see how someone can dislike this film.
But with that said, the film itself is very entertaining and enjoyable, it's just not the home run out of the ball park like I hoped it would be.
