Review of Bohemian Rhapsody (2018) by Sue H — 02 Nov 2018
Overall, I loved it. I done think of Freddie as a young design students but there he was. It was spectacular to get a feel of what it was like being in the band. And I thought it painted the picture of being queer in the mid 60s from a repressive culture, and how personal liberation can veer into self destructive debauchery. And the movie shares the extreme poignancy of knowing you're leaving. I've wondered why he wasn't a voice for gay rights and AIDS activism and the movie portrayed an answer that's understandable. I thought all the performances were great but Rami Malek became him. I imagine it will works be easy for a portrayal to be immigration or unintentional parody but I felt like I saw Freddie. One of the few movies I've been to where the audience applaused.
I don't get the stingy praise from critics.
