Review of Bohemian Rhapsody (2018) by Justin C — 03 Nov 2018
Once you look past the fact that this is a 2.5 hour movie, not a 4 hour documentary, this film is amazing. There were some timeline issues, and a few important pieces of Queen's history missing, but for the sake of the movie it made sense. This is a movie I've been waiting on for a very long time, and it did not disappoint.
Rami Malek does an amazing job as Freddie Mercury. He does him great justice. To be honest, he deserves an Oscar. He's unforgettable. In fact, the entire cast was totally on point. This movie isn't just about Freddie, it's about the entire band - one of the greatest ever - and that's extremely important. It does a magnificent job of showcasing the family that Queen was. The movie works; it's a celebration of the band as a whole.
While the hits are great, I wish there could've been a bit more focus on the lyrical magic behind the band, and dive into some more of the deep tracks, but that's just me being the overly obsessed Queen fan I am.
The film takes a stab at Mercury's demons, struggle with finding himself as a person and his sexuality. Again, we'd need an entire documentary to tackle it all. However, I think they did a good job giving the audience a general idea of how lonely he was, and what he went through personally.
All in all, I'd watch this movie over and over again if I could. This film is larger than life, and the cast is just brilliant. It's a genuine attempt to shine a beautiful light on the legacy of Freddie Mercury and Queen. Go to the theater, see this movie, and I promise you won't regret it.
SIDE NOTE: The last 20 minutes alone is worth the price of admission.
