Review of Bohemian Rhapsody (2018) by Marty M — 03 Nov 2018
Disregard the mediocre reviews-go see this movie in a theater while you can! The music, especially the Live Aid section at the end will blow you away. Yeah, the critics say this doesn't do enough justice for Freddie Mercury, and the phrase "paint by numbers" comes up a lot - but this movie is about Queen, not just Freddie.
It does highlight, but doesn't dwell on Freddie's sexuality and his illness. Cut it some slack, it's meant to be a Hollywood musical epic, not a documentary. And it does one thing just right, it's all about the music.
The Live Aid section of this film almost literally puts you on stage in front of a billion people, along with Queen - which is the one thing a huge Hollywood film can do in such a special way that a documentary can't.
Rami Malek will be up for an Oscar for sure, as he's very convincing, makes you feel you-are-there. Can you spot Mike Myers in this film? He's not just a comic actor anymore. Above and beyond all else, It's not a film about Freddie Mercury falling to earth, but how Queen lived.
