Review of Body of Lies (2008) by Bradford D — 03 Apr 2011
Though I like Leo (Growing Pains) DiCaprio's acting, I can't understand why he keeps getting cast against type as a tough-guy, earthy, action hero. It just doesn''t fit him; no matter how many lacerations or how much facial hair you give him.
He's a 4''2 pretty-boy. But that seems to be the major purpose of this film as Russ (Romper Stomper) Crowe also defies normal casting to play a fat, southern, desk-jockey. There must be plenty of actors out there who can play these parts more naturally, but it seems to be an ego trip for stars to show that they can play any role.
"Yes, I know that I'm a 6'8 white man from Arkansas Mr. Director, but I'm sure the Academy will be impressed if I play an African pygmy mother in your next film. Just think of the free publicity!" Oops, sorry.
I went off my meds there for a second. Getting back to the movie; the plot was ridiculous. As one reviewer already stated, "the Americans are played as complete boobs". Except for DiCaprio, who is omnipotent when the plot calls for it and equally stupid ten minutes later because that will make for a cool scene.
Trading his self to terrorists for a girl he barely knows (who is from Iran, but speaks like she's from Connecticut) ...what does he think that will accomplish? Oh, good. Now we have two idiots to behead on TV! That would have been a good ending!
