Review of Body Heat (1981) by Shawn F — 25 Sep 2009
Body Heat is possibly the first of the new age erotic thriller movement that began in the early 80's. From this we got such gems as Fatal Attraction and Basic Instinct to name a few. Body Heat ranks with the best of them thanks to a strong script, good actors, and one hell of a twist. Don't worry about liking the characters, because after the first act, you'll realize that even trying to is futile. These are manipulative, evil, devious, and delicious characters. Kathleen Turner creates a star making role as the sexy Maddy Walker, a femme fatale if there ever was one. There's lots of sex but very little violence. If it wasn't for the extreme sex, this could easily be one for everyone, but if you're opposed to sex (a.k.a. a prude), you might not enjoy it's frank depiction of such acts. The film is also a little on the slow side, especially compared with modern films, however, this should not deter you from checking it out, as it's slow burner approach pays off in the end.
Body Heat is a classic of the suspense genre and a must see for anyone who wants to see how to do one correctly.
