Review of Bob Roberts (1992) by Dane J — 27 Feb 2006
I had this old hollywood video gift card so Instead of just watching the old netflix, I hit up Hollywood on Saturday and brought home four movies, all comedies I had meant to see but never did. Two of them were poltical comedies although My Fellow Americans was only loosely based.
Bob Roberts was a surprisingly good flick. I had never seen it at all as it's one of those movies that they never show on tv. It's got a little of a leftist political bent but that's fine with me. I jsut don't like people pretending that there's no politics in thier film. This acknowledges it obviously but what I found most interesting about the movie is that it was made in 1992 and is very reminiscent of the way politics is currently moving. Basically the story of Bob Roberts appealing to the hard-working, diligent people while the liberals are the party of the lazy and corrupt. It's all quite ridiculous and why I ditched political science as my major.
On the other end of the Spectrum was My Fellow Americans. This really felt like Grumpy Old Men on the campaign trail as it had Jack Lemmon and James Garner basically playing old former presidents trying to clear their name of a fraudulent case pinned upon them. The plot was kind've boring but overall what I thought was best was the interaction between Garner and Lemmon which was legitimately funny and entertaining and what mad the movie worthwhile.
