This is the origional heist movie and it doesn't do it will all of the pomp and circumstance of modern day heist movies. Melville has fun with his characters, but they also would exist in reality. The heist is completely plausable and Melville anticipates aspects of the heist that would be implausable and shows us how they plan to pull it off.
The ending is poetic and fits perfect with the Bob character.
