Review of Bob & Carol & Ted & Alice (1969) by Jack B — 06 Nov 2008
A witty film about sex, why were they only made in the 60s? In tone it reminded me of Woody Allen's later 'A Midsummer Night's Sex Comedy', a far superior film in terms of acting and pacing.
Natalie Wood looks convincing as the spaced out upper class 'groovy hippie housewife' that the script calls her to be. The scenes in the beginning, very Esalen Institute in intent, are hilarious without poking fun at the flower power aesthetic.
In the end romantic love triumphs over carnality (what did you expect), but the film gets in a few good digs at the rich trying to play at True Sexual Freedom.
