Review of Blue Velvet (1986) by Tighe G — 28 May 2010

This film is brilliant! Anyone who thinks different is an idiot in every sense of the word. David Lynch is a master filmmaker, writer, singer, and artist. He has changed the world of cinema with films like this and "Eraser Head".

This film reminds me of a Hitchock film. Just more mature and with better acting. The characters in this film are extremely well developed, interesting, and beautifully acted. Jeffrey Baumont, played by Kyle MacLachlan, is very charming, sweat, and an inocent character.

Then there's Dorothy Vallens, played by Isabella Rosselini, who is a rather tragic, sad, disturbed, and desperate character, who is like a broken china doll. And, of course, there's Frank Booth, played wonderfully by Dennis Hopper, a raging psychopath, rapist, murderer, and the most riveting character in the film.

The things he does to himself and others in the film, shocks you, and also amazes you. All of these characters are so well developed, and beautifully acted that you can't not get attached to them.

The change that Jeffrey goes through during the film is outstanding. His reactions to Frank's disturbing outbursts are amazing. They're so real. He doesn't scream or cry or act frightened, he just looks confused, like any other normal person would.

There are so many memerable characters, scenes, and shots in this film that can be examined and talked about to death. Which I believe is what Lynch was trying to do. He wasn't trying to impress anybody, but he did wan't a reaction.

He didn't care if it was postive or negative, but he did wan't the film to stick with you. And even dumbasses like Roger Ebert who say the film is crao, can still say that is isn't forgettable.

Which, I think is pretty damn cool. I solute you Mr Lynch for making one of the most influentiall films that I have ever seen.
