Review of Blue Velvet (1986) by Justin W — 09 Aug 2011
Blue Velvet Robe, Blue Velvet Fabric Swatch, Blue Lighting on an Emotionally Blue Torch Singer Singing only songs with the word Blue in them.I get it, it's a Blue Themed Noir~esqe, Darkly Blue Film.
This Film is such a Dichotomy of Beauty & Ugly.Beautiful Vibrant Shots of Crisp Tulips against a Blue Sky against a White Picket Fence, Beautiful Small Town Utopia,a Sweet Young Woman, all so Beautifully Filmed in carefully Layered Serenity.
Then,WHAM,you go from Cheer to Fear. Just when you're feeling drawn in & comfortable, they hit you with the Ugly:Insects on a Severed Ear,a Beautiful Woman sadistically abused by a Sociopath who needs to sniff gas to get turned on,Kidnapping, Sexual Depravity, Physical, & Mental Abuse, a Police Conspiracy.
Another great Sicko Movie that you just can't help but watch once you've started.More than a little creepy, this dichotomy of Beauty vs Ugly messes with your head & makes you feel queezy, but that's why we can't get enough.
That is the unique Genius of David Lynch, to draw you in & make you comfortable, & then Twist into something very uncomfortable to fathom.Mission Accomplished Mr.Lynch.Amazing & Disturbing performances by Dennis Hopper as Frank the Gas Junkie with a Mommy Compex,Isabella Rosselllini as the abused & confused Lounge Singer, Kyle MacLachlan as Jeffry Beaumont, Laura Dern as Sandy, & my favorite wacko in this~Dean Stockwell as a Flamboyant Lip-synching Well Dressed Psyco.
Their catch phrase is"This is a Strange World We Live In" , this is a Strange Movie, that leaves you feeling, well, a little Dark Blue & Sickened.
