Review of Blue Velvet (1986) by Lyzette G — 02 Feb 2011
David Lynch's Blue Velvet seems to be the type of film that people may be immediately turned off by if they were simply judging the narrative and not looked into it artistically. To me, this film is an absolute masterpiece.
Mr. Lynch takes a relatively simple sleuth story, incorporates elements of film-noir and psychedelia, and molds it into... well, a David Lynch film. The obvious stand-out performance goes to Dennis Hopper.
His sadistic portrayal of Frank Booth oozes with perversion, and he immediately becomes one of the most frightening villains in cinematic history. The general cinematography of Blue Velvet is just so wonderful, and the Technicolor-esque hues of the environment create the perfect contrast, making everything seem all the more surreal.
This has quickly become my favorite David Lynch film, and I highly recommend it to anyone in need of watching something beautifully out-of-the-norm.
