Review of Blue Velvet (1986) by Joe N — 06 Mar 2011
3 out of 5 stars. The first time I watched Blue Velvet, I did not care for it at all. However, watching this film for a second time, I appreciated it more for what it is, especially in regards to the use of violence, sex, and suspense and how those all influence emotions of the characters.
Jeffery returns to his hometown of Lumberton to visit his father in the hospital as he recently suffered from a stroke. On a walk after seeing his father, Jeffery discovers a severed human ear on the ground.
Handing this evidence over to the police was not enough, as Jeffery wants to do some detective work of his own. During his investigation, he meets a highly dangerous and violent man named Frank (Dennis Hopper).
While Jeffery may prefer distancing himself from the situation, he also wants to do the right thing and support a woman whose husband and child had been kidnapped by Frank. The use of the song In Dreams by Roy Orbison makes for a classic scene in this movie.
