Review of Blue Velvet (1986) by Stefan N — 18 Apr 2014
Blue Velvet is a film that is terrifying purely on a psychological level. Director David Lynch has an impressive ability that can manipulate positive images into foreboding ones. He mixes the 80's coming of age tale with an 80's slasher flick that is hidden beneath a Hitchcock-esque story-line.
Essentially, Blue Velvet is about a young adult named called Jeff (Kyle MacLachlan) who discovers a human ear that , with the help of his love interest Sandy (Laura Dern) leads him into discovering Dorothy Vallens (Isabella Rossellini), captive of the masochist criminal Frank (Dennis Hopper).
The sounds in this film are phenomenal, and not only the soundtrack. When he picks up the ear, we hear the sound of a seashell. Constantly throughout the film machinery noise is mixed with beautiful music.
Dennis Hopper is gleefully whimsical, over-the-top, and terrifying. He introduces a new villain in an era of Hannibal Lecters and Blofelds. You do not admire him; you are disgusted by him. Blue Velvet is what movies should be.
