In lieu of the Valentine's Day hype, Blue Valentine is a grim reminder that love is sometimes not what it's made out to be. Gosling and Williams put on spectacular performances, presenting for the audience an environment that is almost too believable and too realistic.
The pacing of the film was its only pitfall, as the director struggled to balance past and present, putting far too much emphasis on the latter.
