Review of Blue Valentine (2010) by Jason V — 27 Jun 2012
My only gripe with the film is we never get to see what happened to make these two people grow apart. Perhaps we don't need to have that missing piece filled in, but it is the one untold, important story in the film.
Told through cross-cutting between the present day and the past, Blue Valentine juxtaposes happy and sad times for the couple. Gosling and Williams are nearly pitch perfect, with a knowing weariness between the two.
These aren't perfect people in perfect situations; they are both at fault for the dissolution of the relationship, yet it's hard not to be on Gosling's side in the present. He clearly loves Williams even if she has mentally checked out.
Watch the way she moves away when he tries to kiss her throughout the entire film. This isn't a happy film; it is confident film making with actors willing to go to darker places.
