A gritty portrayal that shows that love isn't always what you expect it to be. The time shifting narrative gives a raw and honest view of the relationship between the main characters. The changing between now and then is one of the strong points of "Blue Valentine" , it's when the movie shifts between them you just realize how invested you are in the characters and their relationship.
Which brings me to the other highlight of the movie. The performances of both Gosling and especially Williams are fantastic. The power,emotion and honesty is sometimes heart wrenching to watch. Blue Valentine is an emotional, realistic and gripping experience , one you're not soon to forget.
