Blue Valentine is not your normal movie with plots and subplots and many unrealistic occurrences. Blue Valentine is just a very raw look at how relationships/marriage works. As one could expect after a while in a relationship it's never all that good and fun.
This is exactly what is depicted in the film. Under normal circumstances it would make for a good movie but what really makes this movie something else is incredible chemistry between the two protagonists in the movie.
Seeing them together is so real, it really manages to create real emotion in you while watching them.
