Review of Blue Valentine (2010) by David L — 08 Sep 2014
The jumping back and forth in time structure is in the beginning annoying and difficult to follow, but as the movie progresses, it becomes more than a gimmick - it becomes a powerful, clever way to compare the seemingly beautiful beginning of a relationship and a devastatingly destructive end of it.
The past sequences are romantic and charming, while the present ones are hard to watch and dramatic. Its characters are not particularly interesting in the first third of the movie, but it all changes once you get used to them - they become realistic, fully realized and their struggle is unbelievably relevant and realistic.
Blue Valentine takes its time to get there, but when it does, it is a wonderful portrait of a destructive relationship and consequent divorce filled with thoughtful direction and fantastic performances from its leads.
