Review of Blue Valentine (2010) by Jacob M — 23 Dec 2013
Man, I love indies! They are the best form of filmaking there is. Once a filmaker gets into the big leagues they begin to just go with the flow. Just do what they know will make money and what they know will be acceptable.
They never go out on a limb and try something new, and with independent films you get just that. This is because the people behind the movie aren't going for high gross' or any of that. They're there to make an original and good film in hopes of making a hit, and that's exactly what they did with this one.
Blue Valentine was an incredibly original look into a receding relationship that had seen better days. The plot devices they used in how they fliped from the past to the present was really cool and the acting from both Ryan Gosling and Michelle WIlliams (nominated for this one) was great.
The newcomer directer did a nice job and I can't wait till The Place Beyond the Pines. A powerful and compelling romance that has no average romantic cliche' whatsoever. I will probably go to the extent of saying it's beautiful.
