Review of Blue Thunder (1983) by Gordon T — 16 May 2010
I LOVED BLUE THUNDER when we saw it opening weekend when I was 11 YEARS OLD and my family and I LOVED BLUE THUNDER when I "put it on" for them in the XBOX 360's DVD-player a couple of years ago.
I've read and heard some critics totally "hating-on" BLUE THUNDER but they MUST be perceiving a different movie-experience than me:
I MEAN C'MON: When BLUE THUNDER suddenly ascends from behind a bridge and TOTALLY SLICES A POLICE CAR in two is AWESOME!!!!!
I hope my former vice-president cousin who had three shows canceled mid-season or his buddies don't try to REMAKE BLUE THUNDER because today there is a really bad mind-set in HOLLYWOOD about how the quality of movies should be.
Its like: "Executive-type" People (like my cousin) in HOLLYWOOD--even though they're educated--totally seem to ignore the value of film and film making.
Even this day there's a headline: SHIA LEBOUF SAYS TRANSFORMERS 3 WILL BE THE CRAZIEST ACTION MOVIE EVER MADE!
BLUE THUNDER and other action films (TERMINATOR, RAMBO 2, THE HIDDEN, et. al) like it are at least INTELLIGENT and directed with some modicum of care and compassion towards the characters in the film and the audience:
TRANSFORMERS only seems to throw BOULDERS atop our heads with their approach to action. The TRANSFORMERS movies are fun, but they're not the ACTION-ACTION movies like BLUE THUNDER, DIE HARD, DIE HARD 2, THE FINAL OPTION, etc.
I know that DAN O'BANNON wrote and imagined a harder-edged movie than what we see on screen with BLUE THUNDER (the script is in my movie-blog on this site).
I'm thinking that ROBERT RODRIGUEZ will remake BLUE THUNDER sometime down the road and under his direction, BLUE THUNDER will be like SPY KIDS meets BLUE THUNDER and it'll "suck.".
