Review of Blue Ruin (2014) by Graham B — 10 May 2014
Quite a simple story of a man vowing revenge on the man that killed his parents, but this is told brilliantly by writer/director Jeremy Saulnier. Macon Blair plays Dwight, a loner vagrant who lives a quiet life out of his car. When he learns that the man who killed his parents is about to be released from prison, he takes it upon himself to impact revenge.
It's a gripping and tense revenge thriller and the average man aspect is very reminiscent of films like Straw Dogs. The brutal violence is never lingered on and is well earned as a great deal of time is spent on the edge of your seat waiting. Blair's central man on the edge performance is quite captivating.
Rather bloody in parts, but bloody good on the whole.
