Review of Blue Ruin (2014) by Lane Z — 22 Jul 2014
A pretty stripped down, grim, smart revenge flick. You are in and out of this movie in 90 minutes but the way it keeps you tense throughout pushes the pace even faster. This movie definitely has flown under the radar with Macon Blair as its lead.
The only actor you MIGHT recognize is Amy Hargreaves, but this movie is clearly for Blair. He looks like a thinned out Zach Galifianakis with the beard and then a fatter Derrick Waters without. He does a good job as the emotionally detached, yet very much involved son of a man whose father and mother were killed by a family they grew up with.
It screams Virginia back country. With the right taste of violence and light-handed dialogue, Blue Ruin should be on a list to watch in 2014.
