Review of Blue Ruin (2014) by Krystal P — 11 Nov 2014
Blue Ruin is a revenge film plain and simple. But made in such a way so as to be a very tight, taught, suspenseful psychological horror-drama that never ceases to surprise. With nice slow pacing in the beginning, it doesn't let on too much, and instead allows the viewer into the story one piece of information at a time.
The characters are all well cast, the direction does not let you down, and theres a great subtle message about violence in America. This director is definitely one to watch. Saulnier just might be the new Tarantino with a nod to the filmmaking style from that other Golden Age of Hollywood, the 70s.
Thoughtful, provoking, intelligent and, yes, messy. This won't hurt moviegoers in the long run!
