Review of Blue Ruin (2014) by Jeff R — 17 Apr 2016
Blue Ruin is a Kickstarter successful film, directed by Jeremy Saulnier, and it stars Macon Blair in a revenge film about a man that has no home nor a job, and then he is founded by the police who tell him that the man who murdered his parents is being released.
So Dwight (Macon Blair) managed to get him, but didn't realize the consequences in doing so. I remember watching this for the first time on Netflix, but I fell asleep during it and didn't feel like watching the film again.
However with Jeremy Saulnier's next film Green Room coming out, I figured that I should watch this again, and Murder Party for the first time. So with this, Blue Ruin is surprisingly better than what I remembered it.
Even though that the plot is a revenge story, it felt really refreshing and surprisingly natural too. With a relatively unknown cast, they were all terrific in it, and the music is very chilling to listen to.
It's smart, which is something that you don't see everyday in films, and it has enough characterization which at first, I thought it needed a bit more of it, but then I thought about their motivations, what family that they have, and what they are like a bit, and that got me to think that I was wrong about it at first.
The action is very realistic and it gets really tense to watch. Blue Ruin is a fantastic film that I'm looking forward to Murder Party and Green Room when it comes out.
