Review of Blue Ruin (2014) by Chris R — 18 May 2014
A film that proves you don't need to spend millions to make a good film. All you need is a decent story, good acting, nice bit of tension and a little hint of comedy.
Blue Ruin is a reference to the car/home of the main characters Dwight (Macon Blair). The film starts of quietly slowly showing Dwight living rough in his car on a beach, scavenging for food, a wash and recyclable goods. The story then evolves when the local Police tell Dwight the man who murdered his parents is due to be released. Dwight is hell bent on revenge and heads back with no plan other than to just kill him somehow.
The film is very dark and there is a lot of violence and blood, so if you are squeamish you may not like it. What is so good about it is the simplicity. There are no clever gadgets or CGI employed, just good old fashioned special effects. This is a simple revenge thriller with a little twist and some good solid acting.
