Review of Blue Ruin (2014) by William K — 24 Jun 2014
This revenge flick is far from conventionally told which is a huge part of why it works, along with the lead actor's powerful, striped down performance. One truly feels as if we have joined him on this journey of bloody missteps.
It opens with him just being released from prison, and really one would think it's quite simply a story of revenge for the murder of his parents. .. As he goes seeking out the family of dangerous misfits supposedly responsible, things turn out a bit differently, and in a documentary like fashion, he gets tangled in a Web deeper than the initial murderhe has sought to find the truth for.
Not a film for everyone, but those who like a bit of indie raw edge, a bit of Coen brothers influence and a truly wonderful performance should be prepared for something special.
