Review of Blue Ruin (2014) by Colin W — 12 Aug 2014
While darkly comic at times, this twist on the revenge thriller is a gripping tale that feels smart and original that keeps you on your toes throughout it's perfect 90 minute run time. Filled with a cast of unknowns, at least unknown to me, Blue Ruin benefits from no A-List actors as it creates a realistic atmosphere and augments the grittiness of the actions throughout the film.
The film feels similar in tone to No Country For Old Men and the films of Nicolas Winding Refn but is however refreshing thanks to the sympathetic lead character in Macon Blair's "Dwight".
While the many silent aspects and gore of the film might not be to the liking of everyone, Blue Ruin is a terrific first effort from director Jeremy Saulnier who is a name I now shall be watching in the future with regards to his subsequent cinematic escapades.
