These filmakers pulled off several incredible feats. 1) They transformed a book of stream-of-consciousness essays into a robust, believable, and interesting narrative, 2) They pulled off the financing and production of the movie through an amazing grassroots social-network movement of over 3500 individual fans of the book, and 3) They made a Christian movie that successfully avoided being sterile and preachy.
