Review of Blue Jasmine (2013) by Hayden H — 21 Feb 2014
Woody Allen's best film in twenty years. Its script is so assured that every scene is perfectly delivered - not a wasted moment. It clearly owes something to A Streetcar Named Desire, but Allen makes it his own, with the exceptional ensemble cast.
Cate Blanchett deserves every bit of the acclaim that she's getting. It truly is HER movie. It's the performance of her career and the character of Jasmine is both heartbreaking, sympathetic and tragic.
Hawkins as her sister is equally endearing with her nutty assortment of men. It's insane how EVERY character is memorable and feels three-dimensional. It's also clever how Allen plays with structure and time throughout.
It's a balancing act, that never falters. After this many years, how does Allen still come up with such a little masterpiece? How many filmmakers have over twenty outstanding films? He's in his own category and thankfully, with the likes of Cate Blanchett, his flawed characters radiantly shine with such brilliance.
