Was this movie written for Blanchett, or what? She bleeds frantic dependence. Her lost socialite gone off her rocker is one of the best performances I've seen in a long time. Makes me think of Gena Rowlands in Opening Night, or Taylor in Virginia Woolf.
She has that kind of reverberating energy that gets under your skin in a good discomfiting way. Allen still knows how to marry character and premise, and deliver a timely story about financial woes, social inequities, and a woman who can't seem to live outside of her fantasy life.
