Review of Blue Jasmine (2013) by John R — 06 Mar 2014
For me, the Woody Allen Kool Aid became watered down in the 90's. His films are filled with pretentious people with inflated egos who take our their middle-age angst through adultery, trips to Paris, and expensive brunches.
This film isn't much different, but Cate Blanchett's pull-popping alcoholic Jasmine really hit it out of the park for me. Watching her flounder as a riches-to-rags housewife forced to move in with her middle-class sister is simultaneously hilarious and sad.
One could do without the subplot involving the sister's love life, and the film is peppered with the usual Allen trademarks that I've grown so tired of (I'm dodging the eggs people are throwing as I type this), but he's written a fine little character study.
Most of the credit, however, should go to Cate Blanchett.
