Review of Blue Is the Warmest Color (2013) by Jenna I — 14 Nov 2013
Honestly, this movie is really split. On one hand you have a pretty well told story about self discovery, first loves, and the loss of said love. The movie surprisingly doesn't feel like three hours, and its shot and acted well.
But then you have the laughably explicit and all around pointless sex scenes. You're really tricked into thinking these mean anything because at first they almost do... showing the comparison between Adele's sex with the boy versus her sex with Emma makes sense.
.. and then the sex with Emma lasts an boringly long time. Eventually you just feel like they're ticking boxes on sex positions and hoping you confuse the continuous sound of loud orgasms for feelings and meaning.
The cafe scene was just as bad. I don't know. There's a lot of 'male gaze' in this movie that honestly minimizes the real emotion and makes it embarrassing for the director who clearly is trying to hide his hard on through these explicit scenes.
