Review of Blue Is the Warmest Color (2013) by Jonathan B — 16 Nov 2013
It's a good film. It has some of the most impressive acting I have seen in years. The cinematography is very impressive, but it is not the best film of the year. If it wasn't for the intense sex scenes this film would not have gotten the attention it has.
It would still be a good film, but not the ground breaking film everyone claims. I would even be willing to bet that if the two main characters were replaced with young men and the intense sexuality was displayed on the screen, there would be a much different reaction to this film.
The story is good, and as I said the acting is phenomenal, but it is not a unique story. Additionally, the film could have been edited down to 2 hours and still be just as good and effective. Don't get me wrong, it's a good film.
However, I think it is being pretentiously rated higher because of the sexual aspect and higher than necessary respect for french cinema. There is no need to go to the theater to see it. In fact, it is much better to watch it at home.
You are going to need to stop it a few times to go to the bathroom, make a snack, read the collected works of Dickens, solve world hunger, and any of the other multitude of things that you could be doing instead of spending close to three hours trying to figure out what all the hub-bub is about.
