Review of Blue Is the Warmest Color (2013) by Brian N — 26 Feb 2014
BRAVO to the cast and crew of Blue is the Warmest Color! In the first 1.5 hour director Abdel Kechiche throws balls to the wall depicting so vividly the intimate moments between two persons in love. I noticed this film had limited release (probably due to its NC-17 rating) and some may find it offensive or uncomfortable to watch due to the explicit intimacy moments which clearly shows not only the chemistry between both stars but their acting was superb! This is a coming of age story, and as one critic pointed out something must be said for a three hour long film that remains consistently engaging.
Initially the three hour notice seemed a red flag to me and I really thought it was going to be a bore but I was blown away by the profoundness, honesty, and beauty of this film. Even the nature scenes, the birds singing their lovely melodies, the children in the playground, everything was perfectly executed.
At the 2013 Cannes Film Festival, the film unanimously won the Palme d'Or from the official jury and the FIPRESCI Prize. It is the first film to have the Palme d'Or awarded to both the director and the lead actresses, with Seydoux and Exarchopoulos becoming the only women apart from director Jane Campion to have ever won the award.
That speaks volumes about this amazing project written, produced and directed by Kechiche. I agree with ALL the critics lauding this one and ditto to what Tom Clift from Moviedex said: ""A tender, at times devastating portrayal of the lifespan of a relationship, one that's as convincing and intimate as any you've ever seen on screen.
" After reading what some of the cast members had to endure while filming this project, I am more in awe and I wish continued success to the cast members! HIGHLY recommended, two thumbs way up.
