Review of Blue Crush (2002) by Chris P — 27 Jul 2008
Between the ocean breeze, sunny script, fast chicks and a whole lot of blue, "Blue Crush" became irresistible as it swept me up in its wave. I could see this movie being made as a documentary, with insight on surfing and just how damn hard a sport it is.
I think the appeal of "Crush" is not its characters or story, but its look and topic. Surfing has almost universal appeal because so few people kick ass doing it. A cousin to skateboarding, surfing is something that only exists on the east and west coast, or on the rims of any country.
Therefore, when people go out and rip the water, its refreshing to see them let loose, to show the force of water who's boss. At least thats my thinking anyway. I don't know any surfers and I've never touched a board, but I can appreciate the competition, the drive and the dedication because of "Blue Crush.
" Its surprising how few surfing movies we have on a pure entertainment level, but I suppose it makes sense given how limited a story spectrum there is on the topic. How do you make a surfing movie about anything else but the 5-star magazine cover competition of the week? Thats what this movie is, but thats okay, because the movie is fun in the sun nontheless.
The photography alone would inspire oo's and ah's on any home entertainment center, and I can't imagine how gorgeous it would look in HD. "Blue Crush" offers a simple story but is surrounded by incredible scenery to look at.
Call me old fashioned, but I'm glad to have seen an enjoyed a film that takes me to a place only an airplane can.
