Review of Blue Crush (2002) by Riccardo Antonio R — 23 May 2012
It's bad enough to make a lukewarm, shallow, faux-inspirational sports-grrl movie, but it's worse to start from an interesting and incisive premise: Susan Orlean's "Life's Swell." When the adaptation sticks close to Orlean's article, the results are great -- a thrashing and deeply-felt picture of an older sister raising a younger sister, a native Hawaiian dealing with parochialism vs. universalism, and a feminist clawing her way from shiftless youth to professional surfing.
But Blue Crush soon enough departs from "Life's Swell" and becomes a weak-kneed indulgence in pathetic, predictable, rom-com happy endings. The MTV quick cuts and idiot music (full of scuzzy, maladjusted rap-rock turds) probably don't help either.
