Review of Blue Chips (1994) by Lucas Y — 25 Jan 2010
Interesting how William Friedkin can make 2 of the greatest films ever back to back (French Connection & The Exorcist) & then not make anything special ever again. This was a good idea for a story & actually a little bit ahead of its time, but Blue Chips fails miserably to reach the greatness of films like The Program or He Got Game.
The scenes where Nolte recruits the bigtime players like Penny & Shaq are the most enjoyable. Once the controversy over the players being paid starts this gets very boring. And the actors certainly can't save this lame story.
I've always had a crush on Mary McDonnell for the record.
