Review of Blue Car (2003) by Steve M — 05 Jun 2004
So its been a while since I updated this shit so I figured I would go all out and change the title of this piece. The new title is movie related and its from a classic 1994 film by the name of Reality Bites. This movie about directionless slackers in the mid 90s really spoke to me when I first saw it. I was only 13 when I first saw it, but it struck a chord and its only gotten better each time I have seen it. I ordered the special edition on DVD today. It comes out Tuesday so by the time they ship it to alaska I should be able to watch it with my grandchildren. .

So I was in a predicament yesterday. Either switch shifts at work today or miss my new cousin's baptism followed by a BBQ. But if I missed her baptism I could go out and tie one on with Kyle and a few mutual friends and a few of his friends from high school home from college. I did not even have to chooose, because Christine did not call me back at work yesterday so I went out and tore shit up. Good news is I dont think I offended anyone. Bad news is the hottie with the fuckin naughty librarian glasses did not dig me quite as much as I dug her. So I come home and am pumped from all the red bull I drank and theres nothing to do. I cant sit still for a movie. So I go online and sure enough theres KEITH. He lives in seattle so he is only an hour ahead of me. It was 3am but he was still online. So I'm like "Hey lets fuckin talk on the phone!" and he was like "Uhhhh....ok Guts." He was awake for no good reason, we talked about future plans, old times, church signs and Kill Bill. Keith is going to friggin Iraq this fall. That fuckin sucks. If any friend of mine gets hurt in any way because Bush wants to further his own oil interests, I will gut that motherfucker Bush and box up his intestines and send them to his father Fed Ex next day air. Just kidding, thats pretty fuckin sick. I would date his daughters, though. Which one? Why both of them. .
.
So I went to sleep thinking I would sleep for a while. Phone rings at 9am. It is Christine from work..
Me: Whaaaaat?.
Christine: Steve, its Christine. Do you still want to swithc shifts?.
Me: Isnt it a little late for that? Please tell me youre already at work.
Christine: Yeah but if you come in now, I'll go home..
Me: I dont really see that happening..
.
I'll skip the last bit and cut the chase. We're splitting the day up so she'll work 7am-1pm then me from 1pm-5pm then her from 5pm-8pm then me from 8pm-11pm. I got to sleep some more and I get to go to Vaeda's baptism and Christine gets to.....well she doesnt really get anything out of this other than having her work day broken up, making it go faster..
.
Reviews!!! So you probably not have heard of the two films I am reviewing tonight. The first is a story about a disaffected teenager whose english teacher guides her through a traumatic family life and ends up falling in love with her. I am not really sure what the film was "trying to say" and it was just ok all the way through. It was nothing special, but it was supremely well directed and I was never quite sure where it was going to go. So it gets a weak 6....my instincts say 5 but I cant quite bring myself to do it. 5.5 it is!.
.
The Dreamers is a foreign film about being young and free.....in Paris in the late 60s. If you think USA was fucked up in the 60s, Paris was worse because the French are an unruly lot. This movie is beautifully filmed with more movie references than a Kevin Smith film. The young actors are fine and the whole thing is just interesting. But it is kind of maddening because its about 20 year olds who think nothing bad can happen to them and live hedonistically, and my brain wanted to jump through the screen and tell them that they cannot live that way realistically.....but then the movie makes that one of its themes so I was saved the trouble. Overall, very enjoyable but not for all tastes. This is one of those movies where you have to put in some effort, to understand and piece it all together, but you get abundant rewards..
.
So I finally saw Eternal Sunshine again the other day (with sara) and I figured out why I felt so uneasy after seeing it the first time. The ending sucks. It has an ending, but then it tacks on another one that basically explains the earlier ending, like it was added on for people too dumb to catch on to the first ending. It also explains some stuf that was better left unexplained, better to let the viewer's imagination come up with something. This flick is 108 mins....I love it completely for about 96 minutes, then that unfortuate tacked on-ending, then of course the credits are in there too and those were fine....nice use of letters to form words and names. There are a couple of absolutely unforgettable moments, and David Cross steals every scene he's in, his role seems written for him. It is a small role and his character is not really important to the central action, but without him the movie would not be quite as great. I plan on buying the DVD and just skipping the next to last chapter whenever I watch it. I will go right from the good ending to CREDITS. I am not sure if I can give it a 10, its a 10 almost all the way through. But the last stuff you experience leaves a sour taste because it is unnecessary and undermines the movie's message. I hated Chasing Amy's ending when I first saw it, but I managed to come to terms with it and be good enough with it to give it a 10, but this is not the same situation. Amy's ending was just something I didnt personally go for. I object to Eternal Sunshine's ending because it is sloppy and unnecessary because the movie has already ended. I dont know....this troubles me. In any event, see this movie. You will look at Jim Carrey in a new light. His role is mainly a dramatic one that the viewer gets to laugh at. He shows remarkable range. Kate Winslet is nothing short of excellent. The opening scene with the two of them is exceptionally well crafted. I so want to give this a 10, but my principles wont allow me. Maybe I'll change my mind once I see it again.....it comes to the Bear Tooth on June 25th!!!!!! .
.
.
No more reviews!!! Now to explain the title. I dont think things are going to work out with the current living situation. Paul is a good guy but I dont think either one of us is enjoying this. I wont bore you with all the details but with the raise I am getting in a couple of weeks, I will likely be able to afford to go back to living alone!!!!! I change addresses like some people change their socks. .
.
.
So its time to grab my 5th bottle of water of the day and have some fried egg sandwiches, and head to work for my busted up day. But I get fuckin BBQ....burgers, dogs, maybe some salmon .
.
I have a drinking problem.....the problem being I was drinking water just now and spilled it all over myself. So I am going to dry off, sober up and get my ass to WORK fools!.
.
I wish you a day full of Peace, Love and Understanding....and all the rest of that good shit.
