Review of Blue Car (2003) by Josh P — 03 Feb 2008
Excellent coming of age story that is as harrowing as it is hopeful. Young actress Agnes Bruckner is able to draw us in and convey all of the accompanying emotions that surface as her character, Meg, is inspired by her English teacher to enter a poetry contest and give meaning to her otherwise depressing life.
David Straithairn plays the teacher who coaches Meg and helps her find her strengths while quietly exploiting her weaknesses and inexperience. There is not a lot of happiness in this movie with one scene in particular being especially harrowing but I found it to a be a interesting take on the "inspirational" flick as it has a very dark side to it.
