Review of Blow-Up (1966) by Andy M — 09 Apr 2008
The more you try to understand something the less clear it becomes. It leads to some fundemental questioning of consciousness itself. The film certainly presents its ideas well but the somewhat dated and awkward acting in places makes this a somewhat less enthralling experience.
I can't help feeling that it would be a better film if it were made today. Hemmings' trousers and camp way of running about with his camera as well as the concert and party scenes were especially cringe worthy even if the latter two were trying to convey some sort of dream like quality .
That said, it is still an Antonioni classic. The final scene of mime tennis is sublime (although their timing and style of play really annoyed me for some strange reason!) Just little niggles...
