Review of Blow-Up (1966) by Jerry T — 04 Oct 2010
The story takes awhile to unfold and there is seemingly an endless array of extraneous shots and sequences but once it gets going the film takes off. The tension level rises continually and although the payoff isn't huge by today's standards, the film succeeds.
Where this film needs to be placed is in the context of when it was released and that makes this film outstanding. This film, tame by today's standards, must have been shocking and lurid in it's time.
Antonioni masterfully creates his world the way he wants and so simply. Filming this had to be so easy. And the scene between Verushka and The photographer, well we've all seen at this point thanks to Austin Powers but man what a revelation that must have been in 1966.
