Review of Blow Out (1981) by Colm M — 26 Apr 2011
'A forgotten gem' indeed. Blatantly hitchcockian in its look and feel. Totally over the top and melodramatic in an almost perfect way. When it comes to the sound track and the cinematography and the script everything is overdone.
But DePalma pulls it off. A really great 80's made for the big screen thriller. Loved the way DePalma ran with the theme of red white and blue throughout the movie given its nationalistic theme. He shot these colours subtley and of course blatantly over the top.
The movie looked amazing and the story keeps you gripped until the smart little twist at the end. Really entertaining, smart and great fun. My only criticism is that Nancy Allen is awful. This would have been worse for the movie but because it is deliberately over dramatic DePalma gets away with it.
